1. New Year’s Resolution Will Make The Gym Very Crowded.
People usually go to gym because they made new year resolution to live a healthy life. That’s why January is the busiest month for fitness clubs, which result in long waiting lines at the treadmills, the bike, etc. But fortunately, people who go to the gym because of new year’s resolution don’t stay that long, usually they can only stay there for 90 days or 3 months. “They bet on it,” says Meg Jordan, the editor of American Fitness magazine, adding that most gyms count on a 20% to 30% dropout rate. So it’s better to avoid this the crowd by going to the fitness club after the first 90 days of the year.
2. Bacteria, anyone ?
Just because the fitness club look clean, doesn’t mean it cleans, there are things smaller than your eyes can see. About 80% of all infectious diseases are transmitted by both direct and indirect contact, says Philip Tierno, the director of clinical microbiology at New York University Medical Center. People get sweat in the gym, and that condition is a high conducive environment for catching everything from simple athlete’s foot to the flu. You should know that every time your hands touch the machine, they are contaminated and should be washed. Even after the gym clean all the machines using spray bottle which said kill all bacterias, it’s safer to wear long sleeves and pants while working out. Bring your own towels, you don’t know weather the gym’s towels have been rinsed and washed properly.
3. We Are Not Prepare for Health Emergencies
Most fitness clubs are not ready for health emergencies that might occur in their club. Almost one-third of sudden cardiac arrests outside homes and hospitals occur in fitness clubs or sports facilities, says Mary Fran Hazinski, a registered nurse and senior science editor for the American Heart Association. What if a person after using treadmill suddenly collapsed ? Can they handle that situation ?
4. Our Trainer is A Newbie
It is often when you’re doing your work out, the health club personal trainer will try to sell you his/her expertise. But some of this trainers might don’t really understand what they are doing, such as your physical condition, the best exercise based on your health condition. You should seek personal trainers from respected institutions such as American College of Sports Medicine.
5. Wanna Quit ? Not That Easy…
Quitting from your gym can be something that is not so easy to do. Canceling your membership often gives you more troubles. The most complaints against fitness clubs is about stopping the membership. If you had your credit card billed monthly for the health club, you should alert the credit card vendor about your membership cancellation, prepare all cancellation proof.
6. Read the Contract
Detail, detail, detail, this often ignored when you sign the agreement, while the details usually have some deal that could make you regret ever sign the contract. Fast talking sales person might confuse you and offer you great things that you feel you can’t refuse that one time offer. Read the contract for every details, never listen to sales talk, don’t let anyone pressure to sign it before you even have the chance to read it.
7. The Equipment Might Dangerous.
Although there are guidelines for the health club industry, the fitness centers don’t need a special license to run their business, that’s why some gyms can be unsafe place to go because of the little standardization. Some of those gym might not maintain the equipment they have, causing broken equipment might still being used. You could ask about maintenance log to make sure weather the gym actually maintain their equipments or not.
8. We Can Negotiate
Often for the holiday, your health club are giving freebies or promotional stuff, you can also enjoy the promo even if you already a member. Just ask them all the promotion stuff when you renew your membership. You can also share your personal trainer with a friend or two.
9. It’s Not Our Problem If Your Stuff Stolen from The Locker Room
When you already feel comfortable with your health club, you might feel safe and put your important belonging in your locker. But there are situations where thieves can grab all your stuff from the locker. Unfortunately, the health club is not responsible for the lost stuff. So you better prepare padlock with a key if you use locker room, at least it will make harder for the thieves to open your locker or you can just bring a very little with you when you go work out your body.
10. Sue Us ? You’ll Never Win
You will never win against the health club, they know exactly how to watch their back. You will always have to sign in every health club you visit, including malfunctioning machines, lost stuff from the locker room, improper instruction by staff members. So you must watch your back, and taking care your health by yourself.
