Let’s Combat Computer Eye Strain !

Bloom in Health, Eyes |

How long you spend every day in front of computer ? When you feel like your eyes are watering and burning, blurred vision, headaches, visual fatigue, and frequent changes of your eye glasses, you should know that those are the symptoms of eye strain.

Eye strain is becoming more and more common among computer users, because it is a common problem with the “prolonged” viewing of computer monitors or other display screens. There’s a term called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) that defined by American Optometric as “the complex of eye and vision problems related to near work which are experienced during or related to computer use. . . In most cases, symptoms occur because the visual demands of the task exceed the visual abilities of the individual to comfortably perform the task.”

What causes computer eye strain ?
Mostly because of poor screen contrast or strong light sources (e.g. high intensity lamps). But beside your screen or light, it could also because you are refocusing over and over again (e.g. you need to change your focus between the screen and the document). The blink rate can also cause this disease, it is said that natural rate of blinks per minutes should be 22, but if you are in front of computer, the blinks become 4 times per minutes, this will lead to burning eye, itching, and blurring.

Now let’s learn 5 ways to combat eye strain while in front of you computer :

1. Make Adjustments. Adjust your screen height, your seating position so that you are comfortable where your eyes are line with the top of the monitor. Pick position where your screen computer can avoid glare of light sources like the sun light from the window.

2. Put your documents strategically. This could help with refocusing thing, don’t use different distance with your eyes between your computer and your document. Looking at your reference document and your screen without adjust your distance can also help prevent eye strain.

3. Replace your monitor if it has insufficient clarity.

4. Eyes break. You need to make your eyes break from work and focus. Do this periodically by looking away from monitor, focusing on something green can help. Or you can just close your eyes for awhile.

5. Blink. Sometimes when you are focusing on something, you forget to blink. Like I said this could dry your eyes, so you better blink more often, but doesn’t mean you have to count your blink, just do it more often while in front of your computer.
